Simple Web-service Offering Repository Deposit, or SWORD, is a profile of the Atom Publishing Protocol (APP) and was developed to provide a general, lightweight protocol for depositing content to a repository.

The original project was funded by JISC with Phase 1 running from March to November, 2007, and Phase 2 from June to November, 2008. Contributing institutions were UKOLN (University of Bath0, University of Wales (Aberystwyth), the University of Southampton and Intrallect Ltd.

The list of implementations shows that the protocol is proving to be popular.
